Selfish genes or selfish memes: The effect of genetic relatedness versus value similarity on altruism

چکیده
Two preregistered quasi-experiments disentangled the effects of selfish genes and memes on participants? self-reported willingness to help in hypothetical everyday-favor life-or-death situations. Memes were operationalized as perceived level similarity important attitudes values between person participating study a selected target person, assessed reported by participant. In Study 1 (N = 761), altruism was highest for siblings, then cousins nonkin; greater memetic also associated with altruism; interaction factors not significant. 2 841), conducted during COVID-19 pandemic, but same effect replicated; term remained insignificant. Both studies controlled range demographic social relationship characteristics, suggesting potentially relevant role future contact probability emotional closeness. We propose that, similarly gene selfishness, meme selfishness can bring about altruism: individuals would rather make personal sacrifice memetically similar than dissimilar others because have higher chance spreading helper?s memes.

Selfish Memes & Selfless Agents - Altruism in the Swap Shop
A "memetic" (Bura 1994, Dennett 1995, Hales 1997) approach is applied to a resource sharing scenario. “Agents" are represented as cells on a grid applying simple cultural learning rules which selectively replicate and repel memes from neighbours. The memes represent culturally learned traits (Axelrod’s 1995) but also influence resource sharing behaviours. In the experiments presented, multiple ...

Evolution is ubiquitous. It has become the language of as many as the scientific discussions in our civilization to day. The term was come from biology, explaining how and why we have biological system as we perceive, how our species become the only creatures to which the earth count on her life. But the highest potential in the idea of evolution is not merely in biological systems. The greates...
متن کاملMaternal-effect selfish genes in flour beetles.
A previously unknown class of dominant, maternal-effect lethal M factors was found to be widespread in natural populations of the flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum, collected on several continents. Such factors are integrated into the host chromosomes at variable locations and show the remarkable property of self-selection by maternal-effect lethality to all hatchlings that do not inherit a cop...
متن کاملThe population dynamics of maternal-effect selfish genes.
We use population genetic methods to describe the expected population dynamics of the selfish-gene chromosomal factor, Medea (maternal-effect dominant embryonic arrest), recently discovered in flour beetles, genus Tribolium. In the absence of deleterious effects on gross fecundity, Medea factors spread to fixation for all degrees of maternal-effect lethality greater than zero and the rate of sp...
